The United States announced new sanctions today, targeting entities and individuals linked to attempts by Iran and Russia to interfere in the 2024 U.S. elections.
The sanctions include measures against the "Knowledge-Based Production and Design Center," an organization affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as the "Geopolitical Expertise Center," headquartered in Moscow, and its director, Valery Mikhailovich Korovin, who is associated with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).
According to a statement by the U.S. State Department, these actors sought to exacerbate social and political tensions and undermine U.S. electoral institutions during the 2024 general elections.
The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to holding state actors accountable for attempts to erode public confidence in democratic institutions.
The sanctions come in the wake of the 2024 presidential election, in which Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Kamala Harris, marking his return to the White House after losing the 2020 election.
