The US has imposed new sanctions on Cuba targeting the island’s main intelligence agency and several senior government officials in a fresh escalation of pressure on Havana.

According to the US Department of the Treasury, sanctions were placed on Cuba’s intelligence agency and nine Cuban officials, including the ministers of communications, energy, and justice, alongside senior Communist Party figures and at least three generals.

The measures were announced by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control as tensions between Washington and Havana continue to intensify.

Since January, President Donald Trump has increased pressure on Cuba, while hinting at possible regime change similar to recent US-backed actions in Venezuela.

Washington has also tightened its oil blockade on Cuba by cutting Venezuelan fuel supplies that previously covered nearly half the island’s energy needs.

The sanctions come as Cuba faces a worsening energy and humanitarian crisis marked by prolonged power outages and severe fuel shortages.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel accused Washington of attempting to strangle the Cuban economy and warned that any US military action against the island would lead to catastrophic consequences.
