U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he and First Lady Melania Trump will attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome.
"We look forward to attending the Pope’s funeral!" Trump said in remarks reported by CNN.
The Vatican Press Office announced earlier on Monday that Pope Francis passed away due to a stroke followed by heart failure. His death at the age of 88 has drawn widespread international attention, with dozens of world leaders paying tribute to the late pontiff.
President Trump also ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff earlier on Monday in mourning for the Pope's passing.
It is worth noting that in 2005, then-President George W. Bush attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II in Rome.
