The US Department of Defense is reportedly preparing to withdraw all American troops from Syria, a move that has sparked concern among key allies, particularly Israel and Kurdish forces in the region.
According to Israeli state broadcaster Kan, senior White House officials have communicated President Donald Trump’s intent to pull thousands of US troops from Syria.
Israeli officials fear the decision could significantly alter the balance of power in the region, especially as it may leave Kurdish forces in Syria vulnerable.
Meanwhile, a Pentagon official reaffirmed the US commitment to defeating ISIS, supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and continuing counterterrorism efforts.
Currently, around 2,000 US troops remain stationed in eastern Syria, collaborating with Kurdish forces to prevent an ISIS resurgence and counter Iranian influence.
However, recent reports indicate that this presence is now under review, as opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has called for the departure of all foreign forces from Syria.
This is not the first time Trump has attempted a full withdrawal. In 2018, during his first term, he announced a similar plan, which led to the resignation of then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
