The US has asked a Brazilian security attaché to leave the country, in a move that highlights rising tensions over immigration and legal disputes involving Brazilian officials.

The US Embassy in Brazil confirmed on Monday that the government had requested the departure of Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho, who has been based in Miami and works as a liaison with US immigration authorities.

The decision follows a separate incident last week in which US Immigration and Customs Enforcement briefly detained Alexandre Ramagem, who had fled Brazil in September after being convicted over an alleged coup plot linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro, a political ally of Donald Trump.

In a statement posted by the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, US officials said foreign nationals cannot exploit the immigration system to bypass formal extradition processes or extend politically driven legal disputes onto US territory. The statement added that the relevant Brazilian official had been informed of the requirement to leave the country.

While the message did not name the individual or directly reference the Ramagem case, the US Embassy later confirmed that it referred to Carvalho.

The development underscores growing friction between Washington and Brasília over legal accountability and the handling of politically sensitive cases involving senior officials.
