A 37-year-old woman was shot dead by a US immigration officer while sitting in her car in Minneapolis on Wednesday, marking the latest deadly incident linked to the Trump administration’s nationwide crackdown on migrants.
The shooting has sparked sharp criticism from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who strongly rejected the federal government’s claim that the officer acted in self-defense. Speaking at an angry press conference, Frey said video footage of the incident “directly contradicts” the official account.
“After watching the video myself, I want to be very clear: this is nonsense,” Frey said, accusing federal immigration agents of trying to manipulate the narrative. He also blamed immigration officers for spreading chaos in the city and called on agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave Minneapolis, while urging residents to remain calm.
The incident triggered protests near the scene, with hundreds of demonstrators taking to the streets. Armed federal agents wearing gas masks confronted the crowd and deployed chemical irritants, according to witnesses and local media.
Videos circulating widely on social media have raised serious doubts about the self-defense claim. One clip shows a sport utility vehicle partially blocking the road. The woman appears to inch forward before stopping to let another vehicle pass. She then gestures from her window toward an approaching pickup truck, seemingly signaling it to move ahead.
Instead, the pickup stops and two officers exit, walking toward her car. As one officer orders her to get out and grabs the door handle, the vehicle briefly reverses. A third officer moves to the front passenger side of the car.
The driver then pulls forward and turns right, apparently attempting to escape. The officer positioned in front draws his weapon, steps back and fires three shots as the car’s front bumper comes close to his legs. The video does not clearly show whether the vehicle struck the officer, who remained standing throughout.
After the shots were fired, the car sped away, crashing into parked vehicles and a utility pole.
The killing has intensified scrutiny of immigration enforcement tactics under President Donald Trump, as civil rights groups and local officials question the use of force by federal agents in urban areas. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
