The United States may have begun relocating some Patriot air defense systems from South Korea to the Middle East as regional tensions escalate, South Korean media reported citing informed sources.

According to local broadcaster TV Chosun, a Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy heavy military transport aircraft was recently spotted at Osan Air Base.

The aircraft is capable of carrying up to 127 tons of cargo and is often used to transport large air defense equipment, including components of the Patriot missile system or elements of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system.

Officials from US Forces Korea said they could not confirm reports regarding the deployment of air defense equipment, adding that their priority remains maintaining combat readiness on the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s military emphasized the strength of the allied defense posture. A spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of National Defense said Seoul and Washington continue to coordinate closely to prevent any security gaps.

Security experts suggested that redeploying a limited number of Patriot batteries would likely have minimal impact on South Korea’s overall defense capabilities.

Ham Hyun-pil of the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses told Korean Broadcasting System that reserve launchers and guided missiles are the most likely assets to be sent to the Middle East.

“If the deployment involves around three Patriot batteries, it is unlikely to significantly affect our security,” he said.
