Many members of the US Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties are calling for conditions to be imposed on US aid provided to Israel.
Recently, Israeli army officials have paid a visit to the US Congress, where they held a closed meeting with lawmakers concerned about the repercussions of the war in Gaza on the humanitarian situation there.
The meeting, which was held in the Senate, was attended by a group of 10 Democratic and Republican members, most notably progressive Senator Bernie Sanders, who is heading efforts to impose restrictions on American funding for Israel.
Sanders is talking here about US President Joe Biden's request to Congress to approve $14 billion in aid to Israel as part of a $105 billion emergency funding package he sent to Congress last month.
Sanders had previously put forward a series of conditions on the funding in a statement issued by his office in which he said that the conditions must include “a halt to indiscriminate bombing, a freeze on settlement expansion, and a pledge to hold comprehensive peace talks to reach a two-state solution.”
Democratic Senator Brian Schatz noted that it is “logical” to impose some conditions on aid to Israel “because they should not be an exception to the general practice of Congress that determines how funds are spent.”
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner also believed that imposing conditions on aid to Israel is consistent with America’s policy toward allied countries.
