The United States has designated the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization, the US State Department announced Monday.

In a statement, the US Department of State said it also plans to classify the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization starting March 16.

According to the department, the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood has used violence against civilians in an effort to undermine efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Sudan and promote extremist ideology.

US officials said fighters linked to the group have carried out mass executions of civilians. The statement added that many of the militants receive training and other forms of support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The State Department also noted that the Al-Bara ibn Malik Brigade, affiliated with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, was previously designated under an executive order in September 2025 for its role in the conflict in Sudan.

Washington accused Iran of supporting militant activities globally through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, describing Tehran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The US said it will use all available tools to deny Iran and Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups the resources needed to conduct or support terrorist operations.
