Indira Talwani, a federal judge in the US state of Boston announced on Thursday her total rejection of two men’s last-minute attempt to avoid extradition to Japan to face charges that they helped Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn escape.

Talwani mentioned that she was inclined to conclude that the U.S. State Department needed to take an additional step before allowing U.S. Army Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor and his son, Peter Taylor, to be handed over to Japan.

“What we have here is a set of conduct that is a crime here and looks like is a crime there,” Talwani said.

The step, which includes verifying the obligation not to extradite people to countries where they could face torture, "is not a very heavy lift," she added.

Ghosn was awaiting trial on charges that he engaged in financial wrongdoing in Nissan.

On his part, defense attorney Tilman Finlay said that Taylor and his son will appeal against any verdict.

Prosecutors said that the Taylors have received US$1.3 million for their services.
