On Wednesday, South Korea, Japan, and the US agreed to strengthen their united front against North Korea’s “threats”.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met with her counterparts from South Korea and Japan in Seoul, following a series of ballistic missile launches by North Korea.

In a joint statement, the three government officials "strongly" condemned Pyongyang’s behavior, describing it as “illegal”, emphasizing that the three parties remain committed to strengthening trilateral security cooperation to confront an accelerating nuclear threat from North Korea.

Sherman reaffirmed “steadfast” US commitments to the defense of South Korea and Japan, including “extended deterrence”.

The officials urged North Korea to cease taking “these provocative and destabilizing actions and to commit to the path of diplomacy.”

They hope that the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will respond positively to international offers of assistance to fight Coronavirus.

The three parties discussed ways to enhance cooperation on a range of global issues, including support for Ukraine, economic security, and the promotion of freedom and openness in the Indo-Pacific region, and decided to hold the next tripartite session face-to-face in Tokyo in the fall, according to the statement.
