The United States has advised its citizens worldwide, particularly in the Middle East, to "exercise increased caution."
This warning came in a U.S. State Department statement reported by ABC News early Monday morning.
According to the statement, "Americans abroad should follow the guidance provided in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate."
The State Department warned of potential attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those located outside the Middle East.
The statement noted that "pro-Iranian groups may target other U.S. interests abroad or sites associated with the United States and/or Americans worldwide."
