US-Iranian talks in Switzerland were suspended 80 minutes after they began to allow for internal consultations, a diplomatic source said, according to CNN.
The source said the negotiations between Washington and Tehran are focusing on the war in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s nuclear stockpile. The meetings reportedly began as an open dialogue marked by a high level of frankness.
The Lebanon file is at the top of the agenda of the US-Iran talks, with an emergency session added to Sunday’s schedule to address the issue. According to CNN, Lebanon was placed as the first item to be discussed by the American and Iranian delegations.
An Iranian official said ending the conflict in Lebanon is the most important item on Tehran’s agenda during the talks.
The discussions are also expected to cover navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme, according to the Financial Times.
US Vice President JD Vance said Iran’s nuclear file and the ceasefire in Lebanon are the two main priorities of the talks. He added that Washington’s goal is to ensure the security and stability of both Israel and Lebanon.
