American sources reported that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, aimed at ending the war and ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, has entered into force after being electronically signed by both countries.
The American news website Axios, quoting an informed official, stated that US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum during a dinner banquet held in France, in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron.
The memorandum was originally scheduled to be signed in Switzerland tomorrow, Friday. However, discussions took place over the past few hours regarding moving up the date of the signing and implementation, according to a diplomat from a mediator country and another source familiar with the talks.
In a related context, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously announced that both sides agreed to sign the MoU electronically by the presidents of the two countries.
Despite the memorandum entering into force, a meeting between the US and Iranian delegations is still expected to take place in Switzerland the day after tomorrow.
The meeting will be headed by the US Vice President and the Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, to discuss the next steps in the understanding between the two sides, including launching negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear program.
