A majority of the US House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a bipartisan bill to suspend the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, just five days before the deadline to avoid a major default.

In his first comment, US President Joe Biden said that the House of Representatives' approval of the law to raise the public debt ceiling is an essential step.

Biden urged the Senate to pass the debt agreement as quickly as possible so it could be signed into law.

White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said that President Biden expects the debt ceiling bill to be on his desk by June 5 before the government runs out of money to pay its obligations.

The law passed after 314 members supported it, 165 Democrats and 149 Republicans, and 117 rejected it.

The bill was referred to the Senate for discussion and a vote on Thursday.
