The United States and France have urged their citizens to leave Iraq as regional security risks escalate amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The US Embassy in Iraq advised Americans on Sunday to depart the country as soon as it is safe to do so, warning of persistent threats from Iran and allied militia groups.

In a statement, the embassy said calls have been made for attacks against US citizens and American interests in Iraq. It added that hotels frequented by foreigners and other facilities in the Kurdistan Region have recently been targeted, along with critical infrastructure sites across the country.

The embassy cautioned that gathering at locations associated with the United States or in groups of American citizens could increase security risks.

US citizens who remain in Iraq were urged to be prepared to shelter in place for extended periods and to maintain supplies of food, water, medication and other essential items.

The embassy noted that commercial flights are currently not operating from Iraq. Land routes remain available to neighboring countries including Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, though border crossings could close without notice.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs advised French nationals in Iraq to leave the country due to the deteriorating regional security situation.

The ministry also renewed its warning against travel to Iraq and urged French citizens currently in the country to inform the French diplomatic mission before departing.

The advisories come as the US-Israel conflict with Iran enters its ninth day, raising concerns about potential attacks on Western interests across the region.
