The United States announced on Wednesday the commencement of additional military strikes against Iran, asserting that the operation aims to degrade Tehran's capability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In an official statement, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces have begun "conducting additional strikes against Iran to degrade its capability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz." CENTCOM held Tehran fully responsible for the "recent unprovoked aggression against commercial vessels and their civilian crews operating freely in this vital international waterway."
Simultaneously with the American announcement, several regions in southern Iran witnessed a series of explosions, amid reports that air defense systems were activated in Hormozgan Province.
Iran's Mehr News Agency reported that the sound of an explosion was heard in the city of Bandar Abbas, Iran's largest port overlooking the Arabian Gulf.
Local sources also reported hearing explosions near Bandar Abbas and Sirik. Initial reports indicated consecutive explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and Sirik, though Iranian authorities have not yet disclosed the nature or causes of these blasts.
Meanwhile, Iranian media outlets reported that air defense systems were activated in the city of Sirik. The explosions reportedly expanded to other locations in southern Iran, with powerful blasts heard on Lavan Island as well as in the cities of Konarak and Chabahar.
As of now, Iranian authorities have not issued any official statement regarding these developments, nor have they reported any casualties or material damage.
