The Trump administration has announced exemptions from heavy tariffs for smartphones, computers, and other electronics, most of which are imported from China.

The move spares these products from a 125 percent tariff previously imposed by former President Donald Trump.

The US Customs and Border Protection agency released a list of tariff codes that will be exempt, covering around 20 products.

This includes code 8471, which refers to computers, laptops, drives, and data processing devices, as well as semiconductor equipment, memory chips, and flat-panel displays.

The exemptions apply retroactively from April 5 and offer major relief to major U.S. tech companies such as Apple and Dell, along with many other importers.

Although no official reason was given, the decision reflects growing concerns within the Trump administration about the negative impact of tariffs on consumers, particularly for essential electronics like smartphones and laptops.

Trump, who previously pledged to lower consumer prices amid inflation pressures from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, has also made tariffs a central theme of his economic agenda.

Despite criticism from both Republicans and Democrats over potential economic risks, Trump has defended tariffs as necessary to reset the global economy and trade systems.

Speaking from his residence in Florida, Trump expressed satisfaction with the high tariffs on China while maintaining respect for President Xi Jinping, suggesting that the ongoing trade tensions could eventually lead to positive outcomes.
