US Ends Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopians as Trump Administration Intensifies Immigration Restrictions

The United States has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopian nationals residing in the country, marking the latest step in President Donald Trump’s escalating crackdown on both legal and illegal immigration, according to U.S. News.

In a notice published Friday in the Federal Register, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said: “After reviewing conditions in Ethiopia and consulting with appropriate U.S. government agencies, the Secretary has determined that Ethiopia no longer meets the conditions for Temporary Protected Status.”

TPS is granted to foreign nationals whose home countries are facing natural disasters, armed conflict, or other extraordinary circumstances. The designation provides eligible migrants with work authorization and temporary protection from deportation.

The program, created in 1991, expanded significantly under former President Joe Biden, who extended protections to roughly 600,000 Venezuelans and 521,000 Haitians. Secretary Noem reversed those expansions in February, arguing that the extensions lacked justification.

In recent months, the U.S. administration has terminated TPS protections for migrants from several countries, including Haiti, Myanmar, South Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela. In November, Trump also announced the end of protections for Somali nationals living in Minnesota.

Immigration enforcement has become a central pillar of Trump’s second term in the White House. Ending TPS designations aligns with the administration’s broader campaign to facilitate the deportation of millions of undocumented and out-of-status migrants.
