On Wednesday, the US Embassy in Cairo welcomed the inauguration of Joseph R. Biden Jr., a former vice president, as the 46th president of the United States.

In a statement, the embassy added that Biden, the longtime Capitol Hill lawmaker, is known for reaching across the political aisle to get things done.

Biden served eight years as former President Barack Obama’s vice president and defeated incumbent President Donald J. Trump.

On his path to victory, Biden secured 306 electoral votes — it takes 270 electoral votes to win the presidency — and amassed 81 million votes, more than any other presidential candidate in American history.

During his victory speech, Biden said, “Tonight, we’ve seen all over this nation, all cities in all parts of the country, indeed across the world, an outpouring of joy, of hope, renewed faith in tomorrow, bring a better day. And I am humbled by the trust and confidence you’ve placed in me.”

The embassy also hailed the inauguration of Kamala Devi Harris, a senator who has represented California in the U.S. Congress since 2017, as vice president of the United States.

"She will be the first woman — and the first person of African, Jamaican and South Asian ancestry — to occupy that position," it noted.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last — because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” Harris said on November 7, 2020.
