The United States deported a record 61,680 Guatemalans in 2024, according to Guatemala's official Migration Institute.

This surge in deportations comes ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House in late January 2025, as he promises mass deportations under his immigration policies.

On Friday, four planes from Texas arrived at a military base in Guatemala City, carrying deported individuals. Witnesses reported seeing around 100 people disembark from one plane, many of whom were women with children.

Guatemala’s government estimates that 2.7 million of its citizens currently reside in the US, but only 400,000 hold legal documents permitting work and residence.

In 2024, 508 flights carrying deported Guatemalans landed in Guatemala, with the annual total exceeding the previous record of 55,300 set in 2023 and far surpassing 2019’s 54,599.
