The United States has sent a 100-strong military training unit to Nigeria to support the country in its fight against Islamist extremists and armed groups, the Nigerian Army announced on Tuesday.

The unit, along with its equipment, has been deployed to the northeastern city of Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State. Its mission is to train Nigerian forces, provide technical support, and facilitate intelligence sharing.

Brigadier General Samaila Oba, Director of Defense Media Operations, emphasized that the personnel are not combat troops but advisers and trainers. He said the deployment aims to enhance Nigeria’s capacity to tackle terrorist threats and improve the protection of vulnerable populations nationwide.

“The Nigerian Army will maintain full command and control of operations,” the statement added. The deployment follows a request for assistance from President Bola Tinubu after bilateral discussions with the United States.
