Chargé d'Affaires of US Embassy to Yemen Cathy Westley condemned the recent attacks by the Houthi militia on Marib, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries, including children and women.

"The Houthi militia must end the violence and accept a full ceasefire," Westly said.

"It is worth mentioning that, 218 Houthi militia were killed, and 24 military vehicles were destroyed near the strategic city of Ma’rib," Arab Coalition said in a statement on Sunday.

The coalition had carried out 57 operations, targeting Houthis in Al-Jawba and Kassara villages.

Last February, the Houthis began a major push to seize Marib and have renewed their offensive since September, France 24 reported.

In 2014, the Yemeni civil war began when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa, 120 kilometres west of Marib, prompting Saudi-led forces to intervene to prop up the government the following year.

Tens of thousands of people have died and millions have been displaced in what the United Nations has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
