US President Donald Trump is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing US Department of Defense officials.

The report said the Pentagon is reviewing the potential deployment to provide Trump with broader military options, even as he evaluates the possibility of holding peace talks with Tehran.

Trump announced Thursday a 10-day pause in the destruction of Iranian power plants, extending until Monday, April 6, 2026.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the pause came at the request of the Iranian government and confirmed that negotiations are ongoing, indicating they are progressing positively despite conflicting media reports.

Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said a 15-point ceasefire proposal had been presented to Iran, adding that there are strong indications Tehran could be persuaded to reach an agreement.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Witkoff said a deal would benefit Iran, the region, and the wider world, while noting ongoing efforts to convince Iran that continued conflict would lead to further destruction.

Separately, The New York Times reported earlier this week that the Pentagon is preparing to deploy around 3,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to support combat operations related to Iran.
