The Trump administration is reportedly considering a ban on the Chinese artificial intelligence model DeepSeek in US government devices due to national security concerns, according to an informed source.
The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, said US officials are worried about how DeepSeek handles user data.
While the company claims that data is stored on servers in China, officials fear potential risks related to data security and foreign influence.
The report also revealed that US authorities are exploring further restrictions, including banning DeepSeek’s chatbot software from app stores and limiting how US-based cloud service providers can offer the AI model to clients. However, discussions are still in the early stages.
In January, the affordability of DeepSeek’s AI models triggered a major sell-off in global stock markets, as investors grew concerned that the technology could disrupt the dominance of current AI industry leaders.
