The United States denounced the “tragic attack” that killed Haiti’s president overnight and President Joe Biden will be briefed on the assassination, the White House said on Wednesday.

“We are still gathering information,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on MSNBC. “We are still evaluating at this time.”

“This is a tragic tragedy. It is a horrible crime,” Psaki stressed in an interview with CNN.

Psaki expressed her solidarity with the people of Haiti, stating: "We support them and it is important that the people of Haiti know this."

“We are ready and support you to provide whatever assistance is needed,” she affirmed. “Of course our embassy and the State Department will be in close contact, but it is a tragedy.”

President Jovenel Moïse was shot dead by unidentified attackers at his private residence Tuesday night.

Furthermore, Interim Premier Claude Joseph announced that the First Lady Martine Moïse is hospitalized.
