Today, the US embassy in Ethiopia expressed its deep sadness over the attack that occurred Sunday in western Ethiopia.

The attack included dozens of victims, including women and children, as well as the burning of many homes.

The embassy stated: "We are shocked and deeply saddened by the brutal killing of dozens of innocent people, in the Wolega Western region of Oromia."

The embassy said that many of the victims were targeted because of their ethnicity.

Therefore, it urged the Ethiopian government to conduct a prompt, transparent and comprehensive investigation into this horrific attack.

It also asked to bring the government to bring the criminals to justice and to take all necessary measures to protect civilians in these areas and other parts of the country.

It concluded its statement, saying that "We hope a speedy recovery for those injured in the attack. We encourage all Ethiopians to meet in peace, to reject hatred and any escalation of violence."

The Ethiopian authorities revealed that an armed attack took place in the western region, killing at least 32 people and burning about 20 homes.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described as a "barbaric attack on the basis of identity."
