Health officials in the US state of Colorado have confirmed the death of an adult infected with hantavirus, stressing the case is unrelated to the recent outbreak linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment noted that the hantavirus strain involved is commonly detected in Colorado during this season, while investigations into the source of exposure remain ongoing.
Hantavirus is primarily spread through infected rodents, although rare human-to-human transmission can occur after prolonged close contact.
The development comes as global health authorities continue monitoring infections aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius, which docked in Rotterdam on Monday.
The World Health Organization has confirmed three deaths linked to the ship outbreak, alongside eight confirmed hantavirus cases and two suspected infections among passengers and crew from 23 countries.
