The United States Department of State on Thursday urged China to exercise restraint and immediately halt its escalating military activities around Taiwan, warning that Beijing’s actions are unnecessarily increasing tensions in the region.
In a statement released by the State Department, Tommy Pigott, deputy spokesperson, said that China’s military maneuvers near Taiwan risk destabilizing the situation in the Taiwan Strait. The statement called on Beijing to cease military pressure and pursue dialogue instead.
“We urge Beijing to exercise restraint, stop its military pressure against Taiwan, and engage in constructive dialogue,” the statement said. It reaffirmed Washington’s continued support for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and reiterated US opposition to any unilateral changes to the existing status quo.
The remarks come after the People's Liberation Army carried out large-scale live-fire military drills in areas surrounding Taiwan. According to Chinese officials, the exercises simulated a blockade of key Taiwanese ports and involved coordinated operations by naval forces, the air force, missile units, and the coast guard.
Beijing named the drills “Justice Mission 2025,” with the exercises taking place closer to Taiwan than in previous maneuvers. Reports indicated that at least 200 Chinese warplanes participated over a two-day period, underscoring the scale and intensity of the operation.
The United States has repeatedly warned that heightened military activity around Taiwan could undermine regional security and increase the risk of miscalculation. Washington continues to call for peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences, while monitoring developments closely alongside its regional partners.
