Michael Banks has resigned as chief of the US Border Patrol, becoming the latest senior immigration enforcement official to step down since President Donald Trump returned to office.
The resignation was confirmed in a statement issued by Rodney Scott, who thanked Banks for his decades of service and praised his leadership at the agency.
Scott stated that border conditions had shifted from “chaos” to what he described as the most secure border environment in US history during Banks’s tenure.
Trump made immigration enforcement and border security central pillars of his presidential campaign, pledging to curb crossings from Mexico and deport millions of undocumented migrants.
Under Banks’s leadership, Border Patrol operations expanded beyond border regions, with agents participating in raids targeting migrants in major cities across the US.
The resignation follows broader restructuring within US immigration and homeland security agencies since Trump’s return to the White House.
Earlier this year, Trump appointed a replacement for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and demoted a senior official within US Customs and Border Protection.
Meanwhile, acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Todd Lyons has also announced plans to step down later this month.
