The United States has approved an $8.5 billion arms deal to supply Denmark with Patriot air defense systems and related weapons, as Copenhagen prepares to transfer advanced systems to Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces.
The agreement, cleared by the US State Department, includes six launchers, radar and guidance systems, and associated missiles.
The move is part of NATO’s wider effort to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses against intensifying Russian missile and drone attacks.
Since Denmark does not currently operate Patriot systems, it must first purchase them from the United States before delivering them to Ukraine.
The Netherlands has also previously acquired Patriot systems with the same goal of reinforcing Kyiv’s air defense capabilities.
Ukraine has repeatedly urged its Western allies for Patriot batteries, insisting they are crucial to protect cities and infrastructure from Russian strikes.
While Washington has shown reluctance to directly finance additional weapons shipments, NATO members have stepped in to buy US-made systems and supply them to Kyiv.
