On Friday, the US announced an additional $3 billion military aid package for Ukraine and its allies in Europe.
According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the new package includes a $2.85 billion drawdown from current US military supplies to give Ukraine Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, armoured personnel carriers, surface to air missiles, ammunition, and other equipment.
According to Blinken, Ukraine is receiving an additional $225 million in foreign military financing "to enhance the long-term capabilities and support modernization of Ukraine's military."
In a second statement, the US Department of Defense acknowledged that the more than $3 billion in military support to Ukraine included the approval of a Presidential Drawdown of security assistance worth up to $2.85 billion.It said that the package comprises 100 M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, 50 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and 500 TOW anti-tank missiles in addition to other tools including surface-to-air missiles and ammo.
According to the Pentagon, the US will also deploy more ammunition for HIMARS, or High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems
The Biden Administration will continue to encourage Allies and partners to make additional donations of air defence systems, artillery, combat vehicles, and other critical capabilities to support Ukraine in defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity for as long as it takes, the Pentagon said in a statement praising Germany's assistance to the US in aiding Ukraine.
According to Blinken, $682 million is being given to Washington's allies in Europe to "encourage and backfill donations of military equipment to Ukraine."
The top diplomat made no mention of which nations will get the funding.
Since President Joe Biden took office, the US has provided military assistance for a total of $24.9 billion.
