On Friday, six people were wounded in shootings after clashes broke out on a South Carolina beach while high school students were absent from school before spring break began, police said.
Police Chief Kevin Cornette said during a news conference Friday that hundreds of people were on the beach in the coastal city of Isle of Palms, about 15 miles east of Charleston, when the gun erupted about 5:20 p.m. ET Friday,
The chief mentioned that the shooting broke out amid numerous fights between people who were participating in the skip day.
Cornette noted that five of the injured were 18 years old, adding that an adult woman in her mid-30s or early 40s was also affected.
Some of the injured were taken to a local hospital, while others went on their own. City officials pointed out that all the injuries did not pose a threat to life.
It is unclear if there were one or more multiple shooters.
The police chief highlighted that the police have arrested several people and continue to investigate.
Authorities recovered several firearms from the scene; however, the chief indicated that he could not determine whether the weapons were involved in the shooting.
