The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for calm and a reduction of tensions in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, expressing deep concern over the crisis surrounding the Central Bank of Libya.
UNSMIL immediately urged de-escalation, restraint, and the necessity of dialogue as the only solution to all contentious issues. The mission stated that it is conducting intensive contacts with all concerned parties to reach a peaceful agreement to resolve the crisis regarding the Central Bank.
The mission also called for practical solutions to the current crisis or the prolonged political deadlock, noting that it exacerbates the situation and diminishes the chances of reaching a political resolution.
Acting Head of the UN Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, recently informed the Security Council that unilateral actions lead to increased tension, entrenching institutional and political divisions, and complicating efforts to reach a negotiated political solution. Khoury emphasized that unilateral measures undermine stability.
