Today, September 8, marks the first death anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II.

The English queen passed away on this date in 2022, at age 96 at Balmoral Castle, the royal family's longtime retreat in Scotland. She was succeeded by her son Charles.

In a statement, King Charles III, the eldest of the queen and the late Prince Philip's four children, said that he is remembering his mother's "long life, devoted service, and all she meant to so many of us."

"In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty's death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us," Charles said.

"I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all," the King of UK added.

To commemorate the anniversary of the queen's passing, an image of her was also unveiled by Charles. This particular photo, captured by Cecil Beaton on October 16, 1968, had never been made public before. The palace confirmed that it was handpicked by Charles himself.

Born on 21 April 1926 in Mayfair, London, she was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states throughout her lifetime and remained the monarch of 15 realms by the time of her death. Her reign of over 70 years is the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female head of state in history.

Elizabeth was a person who took her Coronation Oath seriously and had a strong sense of religious and civic responsibility. She held numerous titles and honorary military positions within the Commonwealth, was the sovereign of various orders in her own countries, and received honors and awards from all over the world, demonstrating her commitment to public service.
