During a UN Security Council meeting regarding Somaliland, Slovenia expressed its deep concern over the actions taken against Palestine last week.
In a statement posted by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X (formerly Twitter) today, Slovenia categorically rejected any false comparisons between the independence of Palestine and Somaliland, explaining that the recognition of Somaliland undermines Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity while threatening further instability.
Earlier, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abukar Osman Baalle, condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s recognition of the so-called "Somaliland" during an emergency session in New York, describing the move as a flagrant assault on Somalia’s unity and a direct violation of the UN Charter.
According to the Somali National News Agency (SONA) on Tuesday, Baalle emphasized that the northwestern region is an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia and possesses no legal standing to conclude agreements or receive international recognition, asserting that any such arrangements are null and void.
He further clarified that this step aims to encourage the dismantling of the Somali state and threatens stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, posing a risk to regional and international peace and security, while calling on all UN member states to clearly reject and condemn this action.
