The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned of increasing drought risks in the Gaza Strip due to soaring temperatures and acute water shortages.

UNRWA stated that the situation is being exacerbated by the lack of fuel and electricity, leaving residents with no means to cope with the extreme heat gripping the enclave. The agency stressed that an immediate ceasefire is essential to address the humanitarian crisis and prevent further deterioration.

The warning comes as Gaza faces a deepening humanitarian emergency, with infrastructure damage, limited access to clean water, and restricted aid deliveries compounding the impact of the ongoing conflict.

Gaza’s water crisis has been worsening for years, with over 90% of its groundwater deemed unfit for human consumption due to over-extraction and seawater intrusion.

Since the escalation of hostilities in October 2023, damage to water infrastructure, restrictions on fuel deliveries, and limited access to electricity have severely reduced the operation of desalination plants and pumping stations. Humanitarian agencies warn that without urgent intervention, prolonged water scarcity and extreme heat could trigger a public health emergency, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
