UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini confirmed on Tuesday that at least six people were killed and others injured near one of the agency’s largest shelters in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. This incident underscores the escalating conflict in the region and its impact on civilians.

Dire Situation in Hospitals

Lazzarini reported from platform X: "Medical staff, patients, and displaced individuals are trapped inside the few remaining hospitals in Khan Younis as fierce fighting continues." He called for all parties to exercise caution, protect civilians, health facilities, medical staff, and UN organization premises in line with international law.

Israeli Military Encircles Khan Younis

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military announced the encirclement of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, a focal point of recent weeks' fighting. The Israeli military issued a warning to residents in Khan Younis and the refugee camp, advising immediate relocation to the Mawasi area.

Rising Casualty Figures

Following the death of 24 Israeli soldiers in the area, the total number since the ground attack began in Gaza on October 27, 2023, has risen to approximately 218. Since the beginning of the war on October 7, official Israeli statistics report a total of 535 soldiers and officers killed.

Intensified Israeli Attacks in Southern Gaza

The Israeli forces have intensified their attacks in southern Gaza, particularly in Khan Younis, believing that senior Hamas leaders are hiding in extensive underground tunnels.
