On the same day that new data on famine in Gaza emerged, the Israeli authorities are preventing me from entering Gaza, said Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA.

He said that famine is imminent in the northern Gaza Strip, and it is expected that famine will occur sometime between now and May.

He stressed that two million people, or the equivalent of the entire population of Gaza, have reached dangerous levels of food insecurity or worse.

He pointed out that half of the population has completely exhausted their food supplies and their ability to adapt, noting that they are suffering from catastrophic hunger (the fifth stage of integrated food security) and famine.

UNICEF had previously warned that the number of children under two years suffering from acute malnutrition had doubled within one month. Children are now dying from dehydration and hunger.

He said: UNRWA has the largest presence ever among all humanitarian organizations in Gaza. My visit today to Gaza was supposed to aim to coordinate and improve the humanitarian response.

He said: This man-made famine under our eyes is a disgrace to our collective humanity. Much time has been lost, and all land crossings must be opened now. Famine can be avoided with political will.
