Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), renewed his call on Saturday for Israel to lift its ban on the agency’s operations, praising what he described as growing momentum toward a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

In a post on X, Lazzarini described this momentum as a rare and welcome opportunity to end decades of conflict, adding that the latest developments offer a glimmer of hope to address famine and the severe humanitarian needs of more than two million people in Gaza.

He urged the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and the removal of restrictions preventing UNRWA’s international staff and humanitarian aid from entering the territory, stressing the agency’s vital role in supporting Palestinians during this critical time.

Lazzarini also emphasized the need for accountability for the atrocities committed since 7 October 2023, calling for justice and responsibility. He underlined the importance of restoring education for over 660,000 Palestinian children living amid the rubble, noting UNRWA’s capacity to support formal schooling through its experience and workforce.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing essential services, including primary healthcare, waste management, and mental health support for traumatized Gaza residents.

Lazzarini called for the release of all hostages and Palestinian detainees, the removal of restrictions on humanitarian aid, and an end to the bombardment across the enclave. He said achieving a permanent ceasefire remains an urgent priority to end Gaza’s suffering.

In late October 2024, Israel’s Knesset approved a package of bills banning UNRWA’s activities and revoking the privileges and immunities granted to the UN body. Israel has previously alleged that some UNRWA employees were involved in the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, but according to a UN report, Israel has yet to provide evidence linking any UNRWA staff to terrorist activities.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump, alongside his special envoy Steve Witkoff, reportedly presented a new plan to end the war in Gaza and outline governance after the elimination of Hamas, during meetings with Arab and Islamic leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
