Polish military police have opened an investigation after an unidentified drone crashed near a sensitive military installation north of Warsaw, according to Polish public radio on Monday.
Radio ZET, citing the Polish Armed Forces, reported that the drone came down approximately 70 meters from a weapons storage facility inside a military base. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred near a military unit in the town of Przasnysz, about 80 kilometers north of the capital. The unit is responsible for electronic and signals intelligence, including monitoring radio communications along Poland’s northern and eastern borders.
The area includes the strategically critical Suwałki Gap, a narrow land corridor separating Poland and Lithuania, both NATO members, from Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.
The corridor, around 65 kilometers long, is widely regarded as one of NATO’s most vulnerable points due to its geographic position and its role in linking the Baltic states to the rest of the alliance.
Polish authorities have not yet identified who operated the drone or the purpose of its flight. Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
