On Monday, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean welcomed the accelerated recognition by many countries of the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, particularly by the United Kingdom, which issued the Balfour Declaration.
In addition, the Parliamentary Assembly welcomed the recognition by Portugal, France, Canada, Australia, and others of the state of Palestine.
In an official statement released on Monday, the Assembly affirmed that these recognitions are a historic step reflecting broad international support for the two-state solution and for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Furthermore, the Assembly pointed out that these recognitions underline that there is no alternative to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict other than through a political settlement based on the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
It described this step as the foundation for achieving peace, stability, security, and coexistence for all peoples of the region.
The Assembly also stressed in the statement that while these wide international recognitions of the State of Palestine are of great importance, describing them as only a first step that must be followed by urgent measures from the international community to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, in addition to allowing the unconditional entry of humanitarian aid, and facilitating the exchange of hostages and prisoners.
Moreover, it stressed that it is essential to take the necessary practical steps to make the State of Palestine a tangible reality on the ground.
The Assembly reaffirmed its rejection of all Israeli measures aimed at undermining the two-state solution through settlement expansion policies, land confiscation, and displacement.
It reiterated its condemnation of the forced displacement of populations. It strongly denounced the obstruction of the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, which has resulted in unprecedented famine and a humanitarian catastrophe.
The latest statement of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean was signed by the President of the Assembly and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Abou El-Enein.
