The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed grave concern over escalating tensions in southern Lebanon following reports of significant destruction caused by Israeli military activities along the border.
The peacekeeping mission, which monitors the fragile ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, called for restraint and adherence to international agreements to prevent further destabilization in the region.
In a statement released on Thursday, UNIFIL condemned what it described as "unilateral actions" by Israeli forces, including the demolition of infrastructure and alleged violations of Lebanese sovereignty.
The destruction has reportedly displaced dozens of families in border villages, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
"UNIFIL urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels," said the mission’s spokesperson.
"These actions undermine the stability of the region and violate United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701."
The resolution, adopted in 2006, ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah, mandating a cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a buffer zone free of armed personnel other than UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army.
However, both sides have accused each other of repeated violations, and the situation has remained tense.
Local Lebanese officials have decried the destruction, accusing Israel of targeting civilian infrastructure under the pretext of security measures. "This is a blatant attack on our sovereignty and a clear violation of international law," said a senior official in the Lebanese government.
"We call on the international community to intervene and hold Israel accountable."
Israel, on the other hand, has defended its actions, citing security concerns and alleging that Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has been using border areas to stage attacks. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement claiming their operations were aimed at "neutralizing threats" and ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens.
The situation has drawn international attention, with calls from various global leaders urging both sides to de-escalate. The UN Secretary-General has reportedly been in contact with both Lebanese and Israeli officials to mediate and prevent further escalation.
As tensions mount, UNIFIL has ramped up patrols in the region and is working closely with the Lebanese Armed Forces to maintain calm. The mission also reiterated its commitment to its mandate, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving disputes.
The latest developments have raised fears of a broader conflict in a region already fraught with political and economic challenges. Analysts warn that without immediate intervention, the situation could spiral out of control, with devastating consequences for civilians on both sides of the border.
