James Elder, spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), warned that time is running out for Gaza's children, especially as water shortages threaten the spread of diseases.
Elder said - in a press conference on Tuesday in Geneva - that with the continued restrictions and lack of water and sanitation in Gaza, the Strip will witness a tragic (and avoidable) rise in the number of child deaths, adding that with the rains falling in Gaza now, children will face a serious threat of widespread disease outbreaks.
The spokesman of UNICEF added that the emergency limit for water - which is the minimum amount of water per person per day, whether in war or famine-like conditions - is 15 liters, while there are parts of Gaza, especially the north, indicating that there are about 700,000 people struggling to obtain less about three liters per day.
Elder warned that without sufficient fuel and water, the conditions of Gaza’s children would worsen.
He stressed that the possibility of widespread loss of life in Gaza is greatly exacerbated by the displacement of about 800,000 children in Gaza.
