UNICEF has warned of a looming collapse of Gaza’s education system, with more than 660,000 children entering their third year without access to schooling.
Kazem Abu Khalaf, a spokesperson for the agency, described the situation as a “catastrophe with far-reaching consequences for the future of generations to come.”
He also noted that education is only one part of a wider breakdown in basic services, including healthcare, electricity, and sanitation.
“We are facing a generation deprived of its right to education,” Abu Khalaf said. “This raises deeply troubling risks, including the potential for radicalization and violence if no alternatives are found.”
UNICEF has set up around 80 temporary learning spaces, reaching approximately 80,000 children. But ongoing military operations have forced many of these facilities to close, with some converted into displacement shelters or caught in active conflict zones.
Abu Khalaf urged the international community to act, warning that the absence of education will entrench cycles of violence and marginalization in Gaza.
