UNICEF: Gaza’s Children Facing Hunger, Cold, and Devastating Losses Amid Aid Restrictions

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached “unprecedented levels of deterioration,” the International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) warned, as the number of children suffering from hunger, injury, and trauma continues to rise sharply.

According to UNICEF, at least 60 children have recently died from malnutrition — a harrowing sign of the growing crisis threatening the present and future of the Palestinian people.

Children in Gaza are facing daily risks of hunger and exposure to cold, a UNICEF spokesperson said in an interview with Al-Qahera News.

“Children should never be victims of hunger or cold — but that is exactly what is happening every day in Gaza.”

The statistics shared by UNICEF are stark. Since October 7, over 50,000 children have been killed or injured, averaging 83 child casualties per day — numbers that UNICEF says are unmatched in any other conflict zone around the world.

“These are not just numbers. These are children. These are human lives being lost in full view of the world,” the spokesperson emphasized.

The impact on education has been equally devastating. Children in Gaza have already lost an entire academic year, and are now on the verge of losing a second. According to UNICEF data, 41,000 children have been orphaned — including 2,000 who lost both parents.

“This is a tragedy that cannot be met with silence. These numbers point to a total collapse of childhood in the Gaza Strip.”

UNICEF called for the immediate lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza. The spokesperson stressed that assistance must be delivered directly to capable and experienced agencies such as UNICEF, UNRWA, and WHO.

He also raised alarm over the insistence of some actors on adopting overly complex and ineffective solutions, instead of simpler, more efficient approaches that could alleviate the suffering without delay.
