The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that Egypt has now become the largest host country for Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict. Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan 19 months ago, over three million people have been forcibly displaced, seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
Recent data shows that over 1.2 million Sudanese people have fled to Egypt since the conflict began in mid-April 2023.
In a report released today (Saturday), UNHCR stated that the scale of this humanitarian crisis has placed immense pressure on Egypt’s resources and infrastructure. Despite the Egyptian government’s generosity and commitment to providing international protection, its capacity has now been significantly exceeded.
Dr. Hanan Hamdan, UNHCR Representative to the Arab Republic of Egypt and the League of Arab States, stated: “We urgently call on the international community to support Egypt in this humanitarian effort.”
