The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Egypt recently organized a ceremony to commemorate World Refugee Day 2024 at the American University in Cairo. The event was attended by government officials and various representatives of United Nations programs.
During her speech, Dr. Hanan Hamdan, the representative of UNHCR in Egypt, expressed gratitude to the Egyptian government and people for their generosity and longstanding protection provided to refugees fleeing from conflicts.
Dr. Hamdan emphasized Egypt's enduring commitment to refugees and highlighted the need for solidarity from everyone. She also pointed out that conflicts, climate change-induced disasters, and economic hardships have forced many people to leave their homes.
She also stressed the importance of providing refugees with opportunities for learning, participation, and a sense of belonging and creativity. She also expressed appreciation for the countries hosting refugees, underscoring the humanity displayed in supporting those in need.
World Refugee Day is observed annually on June 20, with this year's focus being on the right to seek safety. The message is clear: Every individual, regardless of who they are, where they come from, and why they were forced to flee, has the right to seek safety.
