The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a resolution acknowledging the valuable contributions made by youth forums and conferences, including the World Youth Forum (WYF) in Sharm El-Sheikh, towards empowering young people and enhancing their understanding of multilateral work.
The resolution was proposed by a group of states including Egypt, Portugal, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Laos. It urges the United Nations to support Model United Nations programs and encourages Member States to organize their own youth forums and conferences.
Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, expressed his pleasure at the adoption of the resolution.
He praised the WYF for providing young people with a platform to exchange ideas, enhance their skills, and develop their creativity, peace-building, and development abilities. In addition, he highlighted the Egyptian political leadership's commitment to empowering youth and increasing their participation in development initiatives. He also emphasized how the resolution complements Egypt's leading role in promoting youth empowerment at the United Nations.
Meanwhile, the WYF said in a Facebook post on Saturday: “This decision further proves how the UN recognizes the effort of WYF and similar youth empowering entities.”
The resolution is a significant milestone in recognizing the importance of UN simulation models and youth forums in empowering young people and promoting multilateralism. Furthermore, it is a testament to Egypt's dedication to youth empowerment and its leadership in this field.
