UNFCCC to Sisi: COP27 to be 'Landmark Summit' on Climate Change

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received Saturday Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and discussed cooperation for the upcoming COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

"Sisi affirmed Egypt's appreciation for the fruitful and growing cooperation with the United Nations on the issue of climate change and its effects on the world," said Rady.

The president affirmed that he is "looking forward to focusing on this cooperation in preparation for the upcoming COP27 World Climate Summit in Sharm El Sheikh, within the framework of Egypt’s endeavor to build on the results achieved during the recent Glasgow Summit, with the aim of reaching practical and internationally applicable solutions and commitments in addressing climate challenges and mobilizing the necessary international funding for this."

On her part, Espinosa expressed her honor to meet Sisi, and stressed her aspiration that the next summit to be hosted by Sharm El-Sheikh will be a landmark summit on the issue of climate change.

In this regard, she hailed the relevant historical positions of Egypt, especially since it is one of the first developing countries to adopt decisive policies regarding the issue of climate change.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, and the Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, also attended the meeting.

The climate change file, in addition to the national efforts currently being made to pay attention to the environment file, supports the green transformation and confronts the phenomenon of climate change, including through building green cities, switching to clean transportation, issuing green bonds, and adopting the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.
